One triangle through the pipeline

Step a single triangle through the fixed stages, and watch the work count explode the moment it stops being vertices and becomes fragments.

What to notice. The vertex shader runs 3 times whatever you do. The fragment shader runs once per covered pixel, so its count grows with area — shrink the pixel size and watch it quadruple. That asymmetry is why per-fragment work is where frames are won and lost.
