Texels, pixels and mipmaps

A 128×128 procedural texture sampled onto a receding plane. Hover anywhere to inspect the texels under one pixel.

What to notice. With Scroll on and mipmaps off, the far half of the plane crawls and sparkles: one pixel covers dozens of texels but reads only one of them, and which one changes every frame. Switch to trilinear and it goes still. Push the mip bias negative to buy sharpness back and watch the shimmer return — that trade is the entire argument. The inspector shows why: the orange box is one screen pixel's footprint, drawn over real texels.
